Lecrae: when you love God and Trap music
If you venture back, a little bit before the release of his Grammy-winning album Gravity, you’ll find Lecrae bridging the gap between the trap and churches. Houston-born, Atlanta-based, you can hear the influence of both cities in Lecrae’s music. Songs like “Church Clothes” intro take him into a different form, one that challenges many of his fans to understand his upbringing and shaking the cliche cloth that comes with the clothes of being “labeled” a “Christian rapper.” More than anything, he’s an artist who just happens to be Christian—there’s no restrictions on him.
Over the years, Lecrae has locked in various producers: ranging from in-house Reach Records, to locking in with producers like DJ Mustard and Metro Boomin. He’s been vocal with his love of artists outside of the box that critics attempt to place him in.
Today (May 22), Lecrae took to social media to further the promotion of a Zaytoven collab project he’s been working on.
“I was sitting in the car and, I like that Hip-Hop is going back to collabs,” Lecrae said. “I’ve worked with producers but never like ‘let’s both get together and put together a project. It hit me, I was like ‘Zaytoven.”
There’s no set date on when this project will be out or even the name, but so far, the production is sounding right.
Last month, Zaytoven sat down with HipHopDX and had this to say:
““Speaking of the Gospel music and church, me and Lecrae just did a joint project together that’s bananas. I can’t wait for everybody to hear that. I really got a lot of surprises. I don’t wanna open up the floodgates yet but best believe it’s a lot of joint projects coming out this year.”
